An addiction can be developed and formed to any activity or behaviour which allows us to escape from our problems or life itself. It can include drugs, alcohol, gambling, sexual activities, food, shopping, spending.
When these behaviours and activities begin to take over and dominate daily life, the sufferer can be left feeling out of control and powerless reinforcing the need to escape into the activity or behaviour.
In therapy the difficulties which are being actively avoided can be explored, under stood and worked through reducing the need to continue with the addiction.
