Any of us can experience a traumatic event which is overwhelming and out of our control. It is frightening and where we feel our life is in danger or the lives of other people - the security of the life we know is threatened.
Symtoms following such an event include; grief, depression, anxiety (sometimes se vere), guilt and anger are normal. When these feelings are prolonged and accom pany flashbacks and nightmares it can feel as though the experience is being con tinually re-lived with the fear, sweating, smells and pain all present.
Therapy will focus on the traumatic experience that has produced the symptoms. You cannot change or forget what has happened but you can learn to think about it differ ently without the distress, fear and panic. This can be achieved by putting words to the experiences and feelings and going over it to make sense of it. In doing this your mind can do what it has not done and that is to store away the memories and move onto other things, allowing you to feel safe and in control of your feelings.
